Drinking
I went to a shop to drink some water. I always get a sore throat after drinking cold water, so we bought a non-cold drink. The friend who bought it took the first sip and threw it away. I took the bottle from him to see what was going on and took a sip too. Whoops. That wasn't water, it was local rice wine. Two Chinese guys sitting inside the shop were holding their stomachs and laughing. Since they couldn't laugh directly, the shop girl covered her mouth and laughed. It was a little more expensive than water. But those bottles were plastic bottles for water. They had refilled them and put Rice Wine in them. The next time we went to the same place in town, we had the same fun. That time, we bought a bottle of water straight from the pack. Local rice Wine is quite popular in Laos. Recently, a tourist in Laos got a case of methanol poisoning. I think it must have been from using a high-end brand.
Bus trip.
This was also a sleeper bus. A small boy sat on my bed. We put all our bags in the hold. I had put my bag in the hold when I went to get some groceries, guys. So it was a 14-hour journey. A normal journey is 10-12 hours. On the way, a multi-axle vehicle carrying a large container got stuck in the middle of the mountainous road. It was stuck in a ditch. We had to wait two or three hours for it to be removed. Lao people are cruel. Our friend, who was watching the work without blinking an eye, said that the stuck vehicle could have been removed much easier. I tried to sleep at that time, thank goodness.
The Lao woman's pee valve is a little above the water, and after two or three hours, they scream. They stop the bus by screaming. The place where they suddenly stop has good latrine, so they go there. In a deserted area where there is no latrine, they go a little further, take off their pants, and lower themselves to the ground. I remember when I went to Nepal, that happened too.
There is a lot of drama on the bus. The guy who calls home and tells the details. The jockeys who laugh at him when he hears it. The mother who brings a lot of children and scolds them. The little one who asks for the phone and calls her mother "slut" out of pity.. The couple who hugs her and goes to bed with the baby. Many different characters go on the bus. The bus route is through a lonely mountainous area. The bus goes straight, winding mountains and slopes. In our country, Sri Lanka, the mountains take three to four hours to reach. But the journey from Mueang Xai(Oudomxay) to Vientiane took eight to ten hours through the mountains.
If there had been a train, that journey would have been a two-hour journey. Since there was no train, we had to take a long, boring 14-hour charter trip.
Vang Vieng stop
This bus also stopped at the same place where we got off the train, Vang Vieng Luang Prabang. The bus stopped at a beautiful place near Vang Vieng. The scenery there was very beautiful. As we stopped at other places, some people went to pee. Some people went to eat. A beautiful stream also flowed through there. They take the crabs from this stream and sell them while they are still alive. Several people on the bus also bought those crabs. We were also looking forward to buying those crabs, saying, "Hey, this is a family life in Samsara." I don't know if they raise crabs. There, the bus goes to the town. The people in the town had to buy things they didn't have. Those kinds of medicines, grains, and then orchids. They would pick the orchids from the jungle and sell them.
We didn't stop for much at night. But we stopped at a good place to eat in the morning. They cook Chinese noodles right there in hot water. They make something like soup in a big barrel. They put the noodles in a large, mesh-lined spoon and put them in the water. They put it in a bowl with leaves and other pieces of meat and shape it. The Lao people who eat with sticks would open the bowls and open the noodles. We didn't eat anything. We drank milk bottles and ate biscuits. We don't know how long the bus had been waiting. Besides, I had a slight stomachache.
So we arrived in Vientiane at around 11-12 noon the next day. It was a really long bus ride. We got off the bus at 4 pm the day before and it was around 11 am the next day. #amila2r
