Southern Laos, a beautiful region often overlooked by travelers. It’s not just about the lush greenery, wildlife, and serene landscapes—Southern Laos also boasts friendly people and a tranquil atmosphere. Unlike the bustling northern regions, Pakse, the main city in Southern Laos, is a calm and welcoming place with fewer tourist crowds.
Our journey to Pakse began with a plan to fly to Ubon Ratchathani, a southern border city in Thailand close to Pakse, since there are no direct flights. We booked our tickets starting from Colombo, transiting through Bangkok, and finally reaching Ubon.
Our transit through Bangkok’s Don Mueang Airport was nothing short of a miracle. With only a two-hour layover, we managed to clear immigration, transfer terminals, and reach the Nok Air boarding gate in just 30 minutes—an incredible feat given how busy the airport can be.
We flew from Colombo to Bangkok via AirAsia, an airline I frequently travel with due to its user-friendly app and seamless service. From Bangkok, we boarded our Nok Air flight to Ubon Ratchathani, which saved us from an 8-10 hour coach journey for the 637-kilometer distance.
Upon arriving in Ubon Ratchathani early in the morning, we found the city still waking up, with shops and malls mostly closed. From the airport, we hopped onto an airport bus, though we weren’t entirely sure where to get off. Ubon, just 92 kilometers from Pakse, served as a convenient gateway for us to continue our journey into the serene beauty of Southern Laos.
